Description
This pratincole is 24–28 cm (9.4–11.0 in) long with a 60–70 cm (24–28 in) wingspan. It has short legs, long pointed wings, a long forked tail, and a short bill, which is an adaptation to aerial feeding. The back and head are brown, and the wings are brown with darker flight feathers. The belly is white. The underwings are chestnut, but look dark below. Very good views are needed to distinguish this species from other pratincoles, such as the black-winged pratincole and the oriental pratincole, which may occur in its range. The latter species also has a chestnut underwing, but is shorter-tailed.

25 cm
Feeding Habits
Collared Pratincole primarily consumes insects, including locusts, grasshoppers, beetles, and termites, as well as some spiders, molluscs, and cereal crops. They exhibit dynamic foraging methods and are known for catching prey in flight, with a unique preference for larger insects and certain agricultural pests.
Habitat
Collared Pratincole typically inhabit flat and open areas such as fields and steppe plains in Eurasia, often found near bodies of water. Their habitat spans across grasslands, whether recently burned, overgrazed, or ploughed, as well as sand dunes, alkaline flats or sandflats. They are prevalent along larger rivers and estuaries and favor areas like reed marshes and cereal croplands, particularly in southwestern regions. While collared Pratincole forage over various landscapes, including water bodies and coastal scrub, they are also noted to occur at high altitudes during migration, with records up to 3550 meters in the Himalayas and 2880 meters in Ethiopia.
Dite type
Insectivorous
