Description
The bronzy hermit (Glaucis aeneus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in forests and thickets from eastern Honduras south to western Panama, and in the Chocó of western Colombia and north-western Ecuador. It closely resembles the larger rufous-breasted hermit.
Size
10 cm
Feeding Habits
Bronzy Hermit primarily feeds on nectar, favoring Heliconia species, and supplements its diet with small arthropods. It has unique adaptations for nectar-feeding, including a specialized bill shape, and exhibits distinctive foraging behaviors.
Habitat
Bronzy Hermit predominantly resides in neotropical habitats, thriving in areas of disturbed primary forests and dense second growth vegetation. These birds are often found around forest margins, within dense thickets and shrubbery, and are also adapted to swamp forests. They are known to inhabit areas adjacent to streams and have a preference for slightly more open spaces compared to their sympatric relatives. Typically, bronzy Hermit is spotted at elevations up to 750 meters in parts of their range.
