Description
The plain-backed antpitta (Grallaria haplonota) is a species of bird in the family Grallariidae. It is found in the Andes of Ecuador and the Venezuelan Coastal Range. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forest and heavily degraded former forest.
Size
17 cm
Feeding Habits
Plain-backed Antpitta primarily feeds on small invertebrates, including spiders, worms, and snails. It also consumes a significant amount of earth, which comprises up to 80% of the stomach content. This bird swallows larger prey whole, forages solitarily on the ground, often walking or running to hunt.
Habitat
The plain-backed Antpitta primarily inhabits the floor and lower understorey of humid and wet montane forests, with a preference for forest borders. It is often found in these ecosystems, especially on fairly steep slopes and proximate to creeks. Within its broader geographical range, a closely related species, G. flavotincta, is found at higher elevations, indicating a clear altitudinal separation between the two.
