Description
The yellow cardinal (Gubernatrix cristata) is a species of South America bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of its genus, Gubernatrix.
Size
20 cm
Feeding Habits
Yellow Cardinal's primary diet consists of seeds, with potential inclusion of small arthropods. Yellow Cardinal forages on the ground, often in Prosopis woodlands, indicating a possible preference for seeds or insects associated with these trees. Typically forages in pairs or family groups.
Habitat
The yellow Cardinal predominantly resides in mature patches of algarrobo (Prosopis) forests and other substantial tree species within the espinal, a type of thorny woodland. This bird species favors environments with well-developed arboreal structures, avoiding regions that are heavily degraded, newly established, or exclusively composed of pampas grasslands. Yellow Cardinal is generally associated with lowland areas.
Dite type
Granivorous
General Info
Distribution Area
It is found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Its natural habitats are dry savanna, temperate shrubland, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, and temperate grassland. It is threatened by habitat loss and from pet trade trappers. The main gender that is caught are the males. As such, the Yellow Cardinal is characterized as endangered due to the constant entrapment. There was a study conducted that looked at the vocalization of the Yellow Cardinal in its habitat. It was found that there was some variation with the Common Diuca Finch.
Species Status
The current global population of Gubernatrix cristata is between 1000 and 2000. Studies have shown that there are some genetic differences between different populations. Another study has shown that the yellow cardinal presents plasticity in song production, with small differences in song among four different populations.
