Description
The amethyst-throated sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis) is a species of hummingbird. It is found in Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forest and heavily degraded former forest. The taxonomy of this species is uncertain. The subspecies spencei is recognised by the IOC as a full species, the Mérida sunangel, H. spencei (Bourcier 1847), but other authorities lump it with Longuemare's sunangel, H. clarisse of Colombia and Venezuela or consider both spencei and clarisse as subspecies of amethyst-throated sunangel.

Habitat
The amethyst-throated Sunangel's habitat consists of moist and lush montane forests, particularly cloud and elfin woodlands, within subtropical and temperate zones. These areas are characterized by a rich presence of moss and epiphytes. Amethyst-throated Sunangel is also found in environments like forest edges, bushy second-growth areas, and open bushy terrains near streams that extend into humid grassy slopes. Preferring the seclusion of dense woodland, amethyst-throated Sunangel is predominantly a cloudforest inhabitant, often found in damp, bushy ravines and generally stays within or near the forest periphery.
