Description

The empress brilliant (Heliodoxa imperatrix) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. It is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.

Empress Brilliant predominantly consumes nectar, favoring Marcgravia inflorescences and blooms of epiphytic Ericaceae, exhibiting both perching and hover-feeding behaviors. Occasionally, empress Brilliant also captures arthropods through gleaning and flycatching in the forest's understory.
Habitat
The empress Brilliant is typically found in the very wet foothills of lower mountain cloudforests and adjacent forest edges, as well as in tall secondary growth areas. These birds inhabit the forest canopy but are also commonly spotted along the edges. While both sexes venture high in the trees, it is usually the female that is observed in the understory regions.
