Description
The male and female of this species are quite different (sexually dimorphic). Both sexes are metallic green above with a white postocular spot and a forked blue-black tail. The male has a glittering violet forecrown, a glittering green throat, and glittering blue-green breast. The belly is metallic green. The female has a glittering light blue forecrown and a white malar streak (a white streak from the base of the bill extending back below the eye). It is whitish below with green spots and with more solid greenish sides.

Feeding Habits
Violet-fronted Brilliant primarily feeds on nectar from lower to middle forest strata and edges. Violet-fronted Brilliant forages solo, not in groups, and supplements its diet with insects caught by flycatching.
Habitat
The violet-fronted Brilliant typically resides in a variety of forested environments, including pre-montane rainforests, cloudforests, and edges of these forests. It can also be encountered in scrublands, small clearings, low open woodlands, secondary growths, and agricultural landscapes such as coffee plantations. It mostly inhabits the upper tropical and subtropical regions and may at times be found near the lower temperate zone.
