Feeding Habits
Blue-tufted Starthroat primarily feeds on nectar from various flowering plants, skillfully foraging between 2-8 m high. It frequents blooms like Pyrostegia venusta and Ceiba speciosa, vital in pollination. In addition to nectar, blue-tufted Starthroat hawks insects mid-air, with males fiercely guarding nectar-abundant territories.
Habitat
The blue-tufted Starthroat typically inhabits areas on the periphery of forests, as well as the savanna-like cerrado regions characterized by its open spaces, shrubs, and sparse trees. It is also common in lowland grassland ecosystems, which are dominated by grasses and often interspersed with other non-woody plants.
