Description
Description
The Munchique wood wren (Henicorhina negreti) is a member of the wren family (Troglodytidae), described as new to science in 2003. It was first observed by Steven Hilty in the 1980s and not described until detailed studies by Paul Salaman, Paul Coopmans, Thomas Donegan and others in the region in 2001. The Munchique wood wren is replaced sharply by the grey-breasted wood wren at lower elevations and on an opposite Andean mountain slope. The bird is found on the Munchique Massif in the western Andes in the Cauca Endemic Bird Area in the south to Western Antioquia and Eastern Choco in the north-western Colombia. The species' scientific name honours Álvaro José Negret, a Colombian ornithologist who died in 1998. The Munchique wood wren was the first bird species to be described as new to science in an electronic journal rather than in a traditional print-only journal (http://www.ornitologiacolombiana.org).

Feeding Habits
Munchique Wood Wren exclusively consumes arthropods, favoring beetles and flies. It typically forages close to the ground but may venture up to 4 meters to explore epiphytes. Occasionally, munchique Wood Wren may briefly join mixed-species flocks while feeding within its territory.
Habitat
The munchique Wood Wren is found in humid, epiphyte-rich cloud forests that are frequently enveloped in fog. The vegetation in these areas is often stunted, and the environment is noted for its high moisture content. The habitat is distinguished by a climate that ensures persistent fog coverage, creating a unique ecological niche that sharply contrasts with the habitats of nearby related bird species. This forest type is generally characterized by a lush understory and a dense canopy with reduced visibility due to the fog. The munchique Wood Wren occupies a specific ecological zone that is notably different from those of its closest relatives due to variances in moisture levels and forest structure.
