Description
The southern rufous-winged antwren (Herpsilochmus rufimarginatus) is an insectivorous bird in the antbird family Thamnophilidae. It is found in Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and subtropical or tropical dry shrubland. The rufous-winged antwren was described by the Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1822 and given the binomial name Myiothera rufimarginatus. It is now placed in the genus Herpsilochmus which was introduced by the German ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1847. The specific epithet rufimarginatus is from the Latin rufus "rufous" and marginatus "marginned" or "bordered".

Feeding Habits
Rufous-margined Antwren, an insectivorous bird, primarily forages for invertebrates, particularly ants and beetles. It gleans prey from foliage and branches, exhibiting remarkable agility. Occasionally, rufous-margined Antwren supplements its diet with fruits, showcasing opportunistic frugivory.
Habitat
Rufous-margined Antwren predominantly inhabits subtropical and tropical forests, thriving in areas such as dry and moist lowland forests, moist montane forests, and to a lesser extent, dry shrublands. Broader geographical regions include lowland to foothill regions up to approximately 1,100 meters in elevation. Typically, rufous-margined Antwren can be found in midstory and subcanopy vine tangles, occasionally venturing into the canopy of the tallest trees or even adapting to second growth. Although more common in the interior of humid evergreen forests, rufous-margined Antwren is also known to reside in forest edges within the Atlantic Forest region and in taller restinga woodlands with white-sand soils.
