Description
The black-winged Stilt is a shorebird that is seen in a variety of habitats, but it prefers shallow water. It is not uncommon to see this bird in flooded agricultural fields. It utilizes its long bill to search for small crustaceans and invertebrates in the mud, but don’t be surprised to see the bird dip its head in the water in search of food.

Feeding Habits
Black-winged Stilt are carnivorous, feasting on aquatic insects, molluscs, and crustaceans. They employ unique foraging techniques such as picking and sweeping their bills through water. They exhibit a preference for shallow wetlands as feeding grounds, capitalizing on their long legs for wading.
Habitat
Black-winged Stilt predominantly inhabits shallow wetlands across tropical and temperate regions. Their preferred environments include freshwater marshes, swamps, lake edges, and riverbeds, extending to brackish and saline ecosystems such as salt pans and coastal saltmarshes. They thrive in habitats up to moderate altitudes, sometimes found at elevations reaching approximately 2000 meters in certain areas and encountering during migration even higher, around 3500 meters in mountain regions. Breeding commonly occurs on islets within these watery landscapes, and post-breeding aggregations gravitate towards estuarine and substantial inland water bodies.
