Description
The white-backed stilt (Himantopus melanurus) is a locally abundant shorebird of South American wetlands and coastlines. It is found from northwest Brazil to southwest Peru and southcentral Argentina.
Feeding Habits
White-backed Stilt forages by probing mudflats and shallow waters, consuming aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally small fish and seeds. Inland white-backed Stilts prefer aquatic insects, while coastal ones eat various invertebrates. White-backed Stilt selects estuaries and lakeshores as feeding areas, adapting its diet to food availability.
