Description
Description
The Peruvian warbling antbird (Hypocnemis peruviana) is a species of bird in the family Thamnophilidae. It was considered a subspecies of Hypocnemis cantator, but based on vocal differences and to a lesser degree differences in plumages, it has been recommended that they be treated as separate species. As presently defined, the Peruvian warbling antbird includes a single subspecies, saturata. It has a black, white, and grey head and breast, with rufous flanks and a dull brown lower back and tail. The Peruvian warbling antbird is found at lower levels in humid forest in south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and western Brazil. It is locally sympatric with the yellow-breasted warbling antbird.
Feeding Habits
Peruvian Warbling Antbird regularly attends army-ant swarms to feed, mainly preying on insects disturbed by the ants. They forage by gleaning or making short sallies to vegetation, mostly at the swarm's periphery, and may circle back repeatedly to feed.
Habitat
The peruvian Warbling Antbird primarily occupies the dense understorey of humid evergreen forests, often around treefall gaps, edges, and second growth, as well as by water bodies like streams and lakes. It is also found in seasonally flooded forests and, to a lesser extent, in mature terra firme and open degraded woodlands. While the peruvian Warbling Antbird shares its broader range with closely related species, it demonstrates diverse habitat preferences, including regions with palm swamps, bamboo stands, and mixed riverine vegetation.
