The short-tailed finch (Idiopsar brachyurus) is a species of bird previously placed in the family Emberizidae, but it appears to be related to the sierra finches Phrygilus of the tanager family Thraupidae and is now placed there. Habitat
The boulder Finch is chiefly associated with high-Andean grass-steppe environments that contain plentiful large boulders. These birds thrive in open areas where the ground is interspersed with rocks, as well as near riverbanks littered with stones, and regions with tussock grasses and sparse shrubbery. Wet cushion-plant bogs also provide a favorable setting for the boulder Finch. An affinity for rocky structures extends to modified landscapes as well, where they utilize farmland structures, stone walls, and roads. Their habitat usage includes both the interface and the broader expanse of fragmented high-Andean woodlands and surrounding grass-steppes.
