Description
The white-bellied mountaingem (Lampornis hemileucus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in the Talamancan montane forests.
Size
11 cm
Feeding Habits
White-bellied Mountain-gem feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers and catches small arthropods. It hovers like a hummingbird to extract nectar, and may exhibit unique preferences for certain floral sources. Its diet is adapted for high-energy needs.
Habitat
White-bellied Mountain-gem predominantly inhabits the canopy and edges of cool, very wet subtropical forests, typically found in highland regions. This species adeptly navigates through various vertical strata, from the upper canopy down to the shrubs of forest borders, gaps, and open understory areas. Although primarily associated with pristine forest habitats, white-bellied Mountain-gem has also been observed in secondary growth and semi-open vegetation, demonstrating a degree of adaptability. The breeding range of white-bellied Mountain-gem, generally at elevations of 700–1400 meters, encompasses broad montane ecosystems.
