Description
The garnet-throated hummingbird is a large hummingbird, ranging from 4.5 to 5 in (11 to 13 cm) in length and from 7 to 9.5 g (0.25 to 0.34 oz) in weight. The male has an iridescent emerald green back, bright rufous wings and a dark purple tail. His chest is iridescent violet, his abdomen black, and his throat has an iridescent garnet-red patch surrounded by black. The female lacks the throat and chest colors of the male; instead, she is sooty gray below.

Feeding Habits
Garnet-throated Hummingbird primarily feeds on nectar and insects, utilizing hovering and rapid darting techniques to forage from flowers. It displays a preference for certain floral sources and has co-evolved with native plants, showing unique bill adaptations for efficient nectar extraction.
Habitat
Garnet-throated Hummingbird predominantly resides in montane environments, including the upper tropical forests and misty cloudforests. It thrives from elevational ranges of 1200 to 3000 meters on both Atlantic and Pacific mountain slopes but is most abundant between 1500 and 2300 meters. Alongside these lush forests, garnet-throated Hummingbird is also found in forest edges, pine-oak woodlands, and adjacent scrubs. Typically, this species forages for nectar and insects within a low to mid-story height of 1 to 10 meters above the ground.
