Feeding Habits
Red-billed Pied Tanager consumes a variety of foods, including Cecropia catkins, berries, seeds, and beetles. They forage in small groups mainly high in the canopy or at forest edges and exhibit the distinctive behavior of sometimes flying away from a food source only to return shortly after. While they cooperate with mixed-species flocks at fruiting trees, red-billed Pied Tanager's do not forage extensively with these groups. They also display unique foraging by horizontal perching and hopping on open branches to inspect branches and capture insects.
Habitat
Red-billed Pied Tanager resides primarily in the dense high canopy and emergent layers of tall, humid terra firme forests, occasionally found at the edges of these forests as well. The species prefers regions characterized by substantial tree height and a typically moist environment, indicating a reliance on well-preserved, mature forest ecosystems.
