Feeding Habits
Yellow-crowned Gonolek primarily consumes insects such as beetles, caterpillars, and grasshoppers, along with the occasional small bird or nestling. It forages in pairs or alone, utilizing branches and the ground, and is known to frequent the canopies of fig or Parkia trees. Unique behaviors include long hops or upright posture on the ground, where it flicks debris to uncover prey. Yellow-crowned Gonolek exhibits short flights, preferring to stay low to the ground.
Habitat
The yellow-crowned Gonolek inhabits a range of densely vegetated environments including mesic and dry wooded savannas with dense undergrowth, thickets around termite mounds, as well as riverine bush and gallery-forest understories. It is commonly found in acacia woodlands with ground litter and in farmland hedges. Additionally, yellow-crowned Gonolek can occur in urban areas within mature gardens and adapts to dense coastal scrub and mangroves.
