Description
Description
The northern fiscal (Lanius humeralis) is a member of the shrike family found through most of Sub-Saharan Africa. It used to be grouped with the southern fiscal (Lanius collaris). Together they were called the common fiscal.
Feeding Habits
Northern Fiscal consumes a wide array of insects, smaller vertebrates, and occasionally seeds. They exhibit sit-and-wait predation from perches and employ various tactics such as ground seizing, aerial hawking, and gleaning off foliage. Unique adaptations include storing prey on spikes and thorns.
Habitat
The northern Fiscal is adaptable and occupies diverse habitats, typically open regions like grasslands with perches, acacia thornvelds, and sparsely wooded areas. It thrives in environments that balance open space with shrubs, which includes savannas, semi-deserts, coastal thickets, marsh edges, and miombo shrublands. Though it is less common in dense woodlands and alpine grasslands, northern Fiscal manifests a notable presence in human-modified landscapes such as plantations, farms, urban gardens, parks, and roadside verges. Northern Fiscal ranges from sea level to high altitudes up to 3350 meters, showing a preference for higher elevations in some regions.
