Feeding Habits
Red-tailed Shrike primarily consumes insects like beetles and grasshoppers, occasionally preys on small vertebrates and leaf-warblers, and may eat berries. It employs a sit-and-wait foraging strategy from elevated perches and is known to impale prey.
Habitat
The habitat of red-tailed Shrike is diverse, including river valley thickets dominated by tamarisk, arid steppe regions with scrub patches, and barren plains. In their breeding ranges, they inhabit areas with juniper and almond vegetation. Their non-breeding habitat extends to open, dry lowlands and thorny bush areas in East Africa, showing a preference for relatively dry environments with occasional marshy spots. They require exposed soil for foraging across these habitats.
