Description

Van Hasselt's sunbird (Leptocoma brasiliana), is a species of bird in the family Nectariniidae. It is found in Northeast India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. It used to be considered a subspecies of the purple-throated sunbird. In 1939, a group of bird lovers in Hawaii known as the Hui Manu released 28 of these birds on various parts of the leeward side of Oahu in Hawaii in an attempt to get them to become established there; none appeared have succeeded.

Feeding Habits
Van Hasselt's Sunbird primarily consumes insects like caterpillars and aphids, along with nectar, fruit, and seeds. It hovers to catch insects or extract nectar, foraging alone or in groups, occasionally removing prey from webs.
Habitat
Van Hasselt's Sunbird's habitats encompass a variety of forest types, including Melaleuca and peatswamp-forests, heath forests, mangroves, and montane forests. They are also found in disturbed forests, closed-canopy secondary forests, and cultivated areas such as overgrown rubber plantations, coconut groves, coastal scrubs, and gardens. These birds typically reside in regions close to the coast but can also be found inland in proximate geographical areas. Their habitat is generally at low altitudes, with a preference for places that offer abundant vegetation and cover.
