The black-throated munia or Jerdon's mannikin (Lonchura kelaarti) is a small passerine bird. This estrildid finch is a resident breeding bird in the hills of southwest India, the Eastern Ghats and Sri Lanka.
Size
12 cm
Feeding Habits
Black-throated Munia primarily feeds on grass seeds, flowers, and chickweed seedheads. Often forages in small groups, scavenging for seeds on the ground. During the non-breeding season, black-throated Munia may join larger flocks and consume rice and insects.
Habitat
Black-throated Munia's habitat preferences include forest edges, grasslands, and various forms of dense scrub or shrubbery. These birds thrive in areas with open hill woodlands and are commonly found around agricultural lands and plantations, including tea and coffee farms. Moreover, black-throated Munia is well-adapted to human-altered landscapes such as gardens. They occur across a range of elevations from the lowlands to areas at heights of up to 2100 meters above sea level. Their choice of nesting sites is varied, often consisting of large, domed grass structures located in trees or entwined with house creeper plants.
