Description
The Javan munia (Lonchura leucogastroides) is a species of estrildid finch found in Southern Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok, Indonesia. Introduced in Singapore and S Malay Peninsula; possibly introduced in Sumatra. It is found in subtropical/ tropical dry shrubland and grassland habitat. The status of the species is evaluated as Least Concern. They are known to feed on algae, and grasses.

Javan Munia's diet mainly consists of algae and grass seeds. They typically forage in flocks, exhibiting a preference for dining on seeding grasses. Javan Munia has a unique adaptation for extracting seeds, reflecting its specialized feeding habits.
Habitat
Javan Munia thrives in a variety of habitats, predominantly occupying subtropical and tropical regions. They favor environments such as dry shrublands, grasslands, and particularly areas of human cultivation, including rice fields and gardens. Their habitat ranges extend to edges of mangrove forests as well as grassy borders of inland woodlands. Although commonly found from sea-level up to 500 meters elevation, they can also be spotted at higher altitudes, reaching approximately 1800 meters on Lombok.
