Description
The white-bellied spinetail (Mazaria propinqua) is a species of bird in the family Furnariidae. It is found in river islands of the western Amazon Basin. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist shrubland. This species was originally placed in the genus Synallaxis but when molecular phylogenetic studies found that it was not closely related to the other members of the genus it was moved to its own monotypic genus Mazaria.

The habitat of white-bellied Spinetail is primarily confined to islands within major Amazonian rivers. These birds are predominantly found in young successional habitats characterized by grassy areas intermixed with scattered bushes and short trees. They are particularly associated with Tessaria scrub, but can also be found in the understory of young Cecropia forests. These habitats typically experience seasonal flooding, during which white-bellied Spinetail continue to inhabit and forage in the elevated vegetated areas that remain above the rising waters.
