Description
The northern black flycatcher is 20 centimetres (7.9 in) long. It is a large upright long-tailed flycatcher. The adult is uniformly black. Juveniles are blackish-brown with buff scaling. The long square-ended tail helps to distinguish this species from two other all-black insectivores, the fork-tailed drongo and the shorter-tailed and red-eyed common square-tailed drongo.

Feeding Habits
Northern Black Flycatcher predominantly consumes arthropods such as beetles, mantids, grasshoppers, cicadas, ants, caterpillars, millipedes, and spiders. Northern Black Flycatcher often forages on the ground or sallies from perches, feeding alone or in small groups. Distinctively, northern Black Flycatcher exhibits ground hopping and snatching prey from various surfaces.
Habitat
Northern Black Flycatcher's natural habitat encompasses a diverse array of wooded environments, typically featuring moist characteristics. These birds are usually found in areas such as riverine forest edges situated within open woodlands, gallery forests, as well as acacia bushlands, and extend to orchard-bush and woodland savannas. Northern Black Flycatcher demonstrates adaptability by also inhabiting cultivated lands, gardens, and banana plantations, even flourishing in semi-arid zones like those surrounding Lake Turkana in Kenya. Habitually, northern Black Flycatcher resides at altitudes reaching up to 1800 meters above sea level in regions like Kenya.
