Description
The Marico flycatcher or Mariqua flycatcher (Melaenornis mariquensis) is a passerine bird in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae that is found in areas of southern Africa.
Feeding Habits
Marico Flycatcher primarily feeds on insects such as termites, caterpillars, ants, beetles, flies, grasshoppers, and also consumes spiders, slugs, and small fruits. It forages from perches around 2 meters high, scanning for prey to catch on the ground or in midair. Attracted to burnt areas, marico Flycatcher doesn't require drinking water.
Habitat
Marico Flycatcher primarily inhabit dry savanna ecosystems. These birds thrive in habitats dominated by Acacia woodlands and savannas, often with tall thorn bushes and areas of either bare ground or minimal grass coverage. Marico Flycatcher are not typically found in regions dense with miombo, mopane, or Baikiaea woodlands unless acacias are present. Habitats with more foliage are favored during the summer, while in the non-breeding season, marico Flycatcher may frequent more open habitats, including fallow fields with regenerative shrubs. This species is known to actively exclude similar yet smaller species from prime habitats but can coexist in certain broadleaf woodlands.
