Description
Like Gila woodpecker (male has round red crown patch), but pale red on cheek; short black line over eye; much darker and grayer below and on head. It is also similar to the zebra-backed birds of the same genus.
Size
21 cm
Feeding Habits
Grey-breasted Woodpecker primarily consumes fruits, including those from Ziziphus and cacti, as well as various insects like termites and cicadas. It exhibits food-storing behaviors, indicative of its adaptive feeding strategies.
Habitat
The grey-breasted Woodpecker typically inhabits xeric regions characterized by a scattering of trees, shrubs, and large cacti. This species also adapts to agricultural landscapes and occasionally expands into riverside groves, although it tends to avoid areas where the Golden-cheeked Woodpecker (M. chrysogenys) is present. Found in hilly terrains, grey-breasted Woodpecker's range generally falls between elevations of 900 and 2100 meters.
Dite type
Insectivorous
General Info
Distribution Area
Areas of domain in Mexico include Guerrero, Morelos, and Puebla. Knowledge of the behavior of this bird was widely unknown before a 1990 study out of the Cooper Ornithological Society which observed six of the birds. The study confirmed the communal roosting habits of the birds, specifically on cacti. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.
Species Status
Not globally threatened.
