Description
Size: 10–11 inches (25–28 cm). The top of head and nape of neck are brilliant red, while the remainder of the head is white. The mantle, back and wings are black, narrowly barred with white. The breast and abdomen are yellowish-brown, with an orange patch in centre of lower abdomen. The tail is black. The red on the head of the female covers only a portion of the crown, but also extends to the nape of the neck.

Jamaican Woodpecker consumes a varied diet including insects like Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, and Coleoptera, ants, snails, and at times lizards. They partake in fruits and vegetables, favoring those from Cecropia and Ficus, as well as Daphnopsis.
Habitat
Jamaican Woodpecker inhabits a wide range of wooded environments. These birds are found in mangroves, pastures with trees, and forests that grow in lowland areas. They also dwell in cultivated landscapes, such as citrus and coconut plantations, as well as shaded coffee plantations and gardens. Furthermore, their habitat includes both dry and wet limestone forests, mistforests, and lower montane rainforests, with the highest population densities in secondary mesophytic forests. This variety of habitats extends from sea level up into mountainous regions.
