Description
The fan-tailed berrypecker (Melanocharis versteri) is a species of bird in the family Melanocharitidae. It is found in New Guinea. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. The female is darker-colored and bigger than the male, an unusual feature for a passerine (Kikkawa 2003).
Size
15 cm
Feeding Habits
Fan-tailed Berrypecker primarily consumes small berries and arthropods, foraging in shrubberies and forest edges. It frequently employs active gleaning and hover-gleaning techniques to feed, sometimes on the ground or at lower levels, occasionally ascending when fruits are available. Typically solitary, fan-tailed Berrypecker may join mixed-species flocks briefly but seldom integrates fully.
Habitat
The fan-tailed Berrypecker predominantly occupies montane forest regions and areas of thick secondary growth. It frequents fruiting trees in indigenous gardens bordering these forests as well as stands of tree ferns within alpine savanna landscapes. The species has a preference for higher altitude zones and is regularly found in settings where its habitat coincides with, or supersedes, that of related berrypecker species.
