Description

The violet-throated metaltail (Metallura baroni) — also called métallure de baron, metalura de azuay, and metalura gorjivioleta — is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae found only in Ecuador. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forest and subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland. it is threatened by habitat loss.

Violet-throated Metaltail primarily feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers, including Durantha, Macleania, ericads, the parasitic Tristerix longebracteatus, and Castilleja fissifolia. It exhibits territorial behavior when feeding, with males establishing specific feeding areas.
Habitat
The violet-throated Metaltail frequents the margins of moist elfin forests and Polylepis woods, often marked by plentiful boulders festooned with a diverse flora including bromeliads, ericads, orchids, ferns, and mosses. This species is also found in the adjacent páramo ecosystems. It typically forages in various strata, from the undergrowth to the forest canopy.
