Description
The ocellated crake (Micropygia schomburgkii) is a species of bird in the family Rallidae. It belongs to the monotypic genus Micropygia. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.
Size
15 cm
Feeding Habits
Ocellated Crake primarily feeds on insects including beetles, stoneflies, grasshoppers, cockroaches, and various ants. Ocellated Crake seeks food by foraging on forest floors, displaying a preference for diverse insect prey, indicative of opportunistic feeding behavior.
Habitat
The ocellated Crake is typically found in dense grassland ecosystems, ranging from flat, well-drained areas to seasonally inundated zones. These environments often vary from open grasslands to regions with a dense mix of shrubs and small trees, and may also be adjacent to marshes or forest peripheries. The ground in these habitats can be muddy or covered with shallow water. Grass in these areas can be as short as approximately 1 meter or grow very tall, especially near water drainage channels. The ocellated Crake is adapted to use the burrows created by rodents, such as the Cavia species, within dense vegetation and is usually found at elevations up to 1400 meters in lowland regions.
Dite type
Omnivorous
