Description

The cinnamon-bellied ground tyrant (Muscisaxicola capistratus) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers. It is found in western Argentina, eastern Andean Chile, southwest Bolivia, and southern Peru. Its natural habitat is temperate grassland. The cinnamon-bellied ground tyrant breeds in extreme southern Argentina and Chile, and northern Tierra del Fuego, and migrates north in the austral winter.

Cinnamon-bellied Ground Tyrant primarily consumes insects, foraging terrestrially with short runs and hops. It exhibits unique stop-and-stand hunting behavior and sometimes sallies from ground or rocks. In winter, cinnamon-bellied Ground Tyrant often forms flocks.
Habitat
The cinnamon-bellied Ground Tyrant typically inhabits rolling hills with a sparse distribution of bushes and grass, often found near rocky outcrops and slopes, as well as in rocky canyons with interspersed grassy areas. This species shows a preference for flat terrain with short, moist grasslands and may adapt to pastures. During the non-breeding season, cinnamon-bellied Ground Tyrant frequents cushion bogs and the shores of lakes, and is known to occasionally roost within caves.
