Feeding Habits
White-winged Grosbeak primarily feeds on juniper berries, discarding the pulp, dogwood berries, seeds of spruce and mountain ash, rose hips, docks, and strawberries. Nestlings consume juniper seeds, weevils, Orthoptera larvae, and leafhoppers. White-winged Grosbeak forages on the ground, in bushes and trees, and may stay in one spot. Disturbance leads it to perch before returning. White-winged Grosbeak breaks open hard shells with its bill, often feeding noisily in pairs or flocks, sometimes with other finches.
Habitat
White-winged Grosbeak resides mainly in boreal forests, predominantly within submontane and montane zones rich in juniper and spruce. Occupying mixed woodlands with fir and rhododendron, they also inhabit slopes adorned with bamboo and sparse vegetation at the edge of forests. Habitually breeding at elevations of 1900 to 4200 meters, white-winged Grosbeak shifts to lower foothills and plains during off-seasons.
