Feeding Habits
White-winged Grosbeak primarily feeds on juniper berries, discarding the pulp, dogwood berries, seeds of spruce and mountain ash, rose hips, docks, and strawberries. Nestlings consume juniper seeds, weevils, Orthoptera larvae, and leafhoppers. White-winged Grosbeak forages on the ground, in bushes and trees, and may stay in one spot. Disturbance leads it to perch before returning. White-winged Grosbeak breaks open hard shells with its bill, often feeding noisily in pairs or flocks, sometimes with other finches.
Habitat
White-winged Grosbeak typically inhabits boreal forests, favoring submontane and montane regions with a prevalence of juniper and spruce trees. This bird species can be found in mixed forests, where fir trees and rhododendron bushes coexist, as well as areas with bamboo, sparse bushes, and scrub on slopes at or beyond the forest line. They are known to breed at altitudes ranging from 1900 to over 4200 meters, with variations depending on the geographical region. During the non-breeding season, white-winged Grosbeak descends to lower elevations in foothills and plains but generally remains in similar habitats, extending to places as low as 1100 meters in some regions.
