Black-and-yellow Grosbeak feed on seeds, buds, shoots, berries of various trees, and insects like moths and cicadas. They forage on the ground, bushes, and tree canopies, often digging in exposed ground. Nestlings mainly eat small insects and larvae. These birds, generally shy, can also be tame and are detected by their calls.
Habitat
Black-and-yellow Grosbeak typically inhabits montane and submontane moist forests, including those dominated by conifer and deodar trees. These birds are also found in oak forests and scrubby vegetation at the edges of woodlands. Their preference extends to mixed forests featuring a combination of blue pine, silver fir, and spruce.
