Description
The red-collared myzomela (Myzomela rosenbergii) is a species of bird in the family Meliphagidae. It is found in New Guinea. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
Size
13 cm
Feeding Habits
Red-collared Myzomela primarily feeds on nectar from diverse flora such as Albizia and Syzygium, and also consumes small arthropods and fruits. They forage mainly in the canopy, gleaning from foliage and probing flowers, but will also feed in lower-level vegetation. Unique behaviors include feeding in large, mixed-species groups and showing notable agility and assertiveness while foraging.
Habitat
The habitat of red-collared Myzomela is characterized by a range of mountainous forest environments. These birds are commonly found in primary forests, such as lower montane to high mountain cloud forests, moss forests, and dense riverine forests, including areas dominated by oak and Pandanus shrubs. They also inhabit forest edges, secondary forests, alpine shrublands, and occasionally appear in human-modified landscapes like gardens with flowering shrubs. While typically associated with mountainous forested regions, red-collared Myzomela does not strictly confine itself to treeline zones but may also be seen in shrublands and herbfields.
