Description
Nystalus maculatus, also known by its common name Spot-backed Puffbird is a species from the genus Nystalus.

Feeding Habits
Spot-backed Puffbird primarily consumes insects, such as caterpillars, and has been known to eat colubrid snakes. It employs a still-hunting strategy from low perches to catch prey on the ground or in foliage.
Habitat
Spot-backed Puffbird typically resides in a variety of open to semi-open landscapes, which include arid and semi-humid regions. These birds are adapted to environments such as lowland and foothill semi-deciduous woodlands, woodland edges, savannas, palm groves, and scrubland. Their habitat spans across broader geographical regions that feature cerrado, caatinga, and campo ecosystems, where they can also be found in shrubs, pastures, and cultivated areas. In southern portions of their range, spot-backed Puffbird dwells in dry subtropical forests, chaco habitats, and arid montane vegetation, sometimes at altitudes above 2000 meters.
