Description
The wedge-tailed hillstar (Oreotrochilus adela) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. This sexually dimorphic species is found in scrub and woodland at altitudes of 2,600 to 4,000 metres (8,500 to 13,100 ft) in the Andes of Bolivia and far north-western border region of Argentina. It is threatened by habitat loss. Uniquely among the hillstars, the flanks of the male are deep chestnut, while the underparts of the female are orange-buff.

Feeding Habits
Wedge-tailed Hillstar's diet primarily consists of nectar from specific plants like Barnadesia and Mutisia, as well as from Loranthaceae mistletoes, Puya, and columnar cacti. It supplements its diet with insects, employing foraging as its main feeding behavior.
Habitat
The wedge-tailed Hillstar inhabits environments that typically range from semi-arid to temporarily humid areas characterized by dispersed mesophytic shrubs. It is commonly found in gullies flourishing with Polylepis trees, which frequently host parasitic loranthaceans (Tristerix), as well as in areas with Barnadesia thickets. The wedge-tailed Hillstar can also adapt to degraded habitats with Dodonea bushes if an adequate presence of scattered columnar cacti and taller bushes is maintained.
