Description
The white-sided hillstar (Oreotrochilus leucopleurus) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is the southernmost species of hillstar, being found in grassland and scrubland at altitudes of 1,200 to 4,000 metres (3,900 to 13,100 ft) in far southern Bolivia, Chile and western Argentina. Feeding Habits
White-sided Hillstar primarily feeds on nectar from flowers, favoring Barnadesia, Berberis, Chuquiragua, and Puya species. It exhibits specialized feeding behaviors to extract nectar, indicative of unique dietary adaptations.
Habitat
The habitat of white-sided Hillstar consists mainly of the Puna grassland eco-region, characterized by a sparse presence of dwarf bushes and an abundance of columnar cacti and Puya plants.
