Feeding Habits
Rufous-headed Chachalaca primarily consumes fruits, such as coffee berries, figs, and Spondias mombin, including occasional Cecropia catkins. They forage in small flocks, both in trees and on the ground, and show adaptability by feeding in banana plantations and maize fields.
Habitat
The habitat of rufous-headed Chachalaca primarily encompasses dry deciduous forests and humid cloud forests. These birds are also found in tropical coastal zones, extending to the foothills of the Andes. Rufous-headed Chachalaca may occasionally inhabit agricultural lands and has been noted in semi-evergreen and evergreen forest patches, particularly those dominated by Ceiba trees. The presence of permanent water sources is considered beneficial for rufous-headed Chachalaca during the dry season, although their occurrence in arid regions is not documented.
