Description
Some of the subspecies of the Fiji whistler are yellow-throated, while others are white-throated. It has been speculated that these two groups are the result of separate waves of colonisations, with the yellow-throated being the result of an early colonisation, and the white-throated the result of a secondary colonisation. The yellow-throated are found on most northern and central islands (Vanua Levu, Viti Levu, Taveuni, Ovalau, Kioa, Rabi, Koro and Vatu Vara), while the white-throated are found on some southern islands (Kadavu, Gau and southern Lau Islands.
Feeding Habits
Fiji Whistler's diet primarily consists of invertebrates, especially insects and spiders, with occasional fruit and rare seeds. Foraging mainly arboreally, it searches, gleans, and sallies across different forest strata. Prey is often beaten before consumption. Males descend to lower levels, whereas females and juveniles stay in the canopy, often joining mixed-species flocks.
Habitat
The habitat favored by fiji Whistler encompasses primarily mature true forests, including areas of secondary forest regeneration. These birds tend to flourish in environments characterized by dense vegetation that provides ample coverage and a robust ecosystem necessary for feeding and breeding. They are predominantly found in regions with such forested terrains.
