Description
The great-billed kingfisher or black-billed kingfisher (Pelargopsis melanorhyncha) is a species of bird in the subfamily Halcyoninae. It is endemic to the Sulawesi region of Indonesia. It can be found on the island of Sulawesi and in the Sula Archipelago.
Size
35 cm
Feeding Habits
Great-billed Kingfisher primarily consumes crabs and crayfish, employing a sit-and-wait strategy by perching over water to spot prey. It dives to capture its food, which is then beaten on a perch before swallowing.
Habitat
Great-billed Kingfisher predominantly resides in subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, favoring environments such as estuaries, mangroves, coastal scrub, and wooded seashores. They are also found around shrubby sea cliffs, coastal islets, and coastal villages with ample tree coverage. Inland, great-billed Kingfisher can be spotted along large rivers and creeks in woodland areas, as well as in lightly wooded agricultural lands and village plantations. Great-billed Kingfisher may also inhabit swamps and upon disturbance, retreat into the forest. Their elevation range extends from sea level up to 600 meters, occasionally reaching 980 meters in certain national parks.
