Dusky-legged Guan primarily consumes fruit, flowers, and buds, foraging both on the ground and in trees. Known as a seed disperser, dusky-legged Guan is crucial for the propagation of numerous tree species, including those that are endangered.

The dusky-legged Guan predominately inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests, thriving especially in tall and gallery forests. This bird species is found across broader geographical regions of tropical and upper tropical zones, extending up to elevations of 2300 meters. While adapted to life in dense, wet forests, dusky-legged Guan populations can occasionally be found on small river islands with secondary growth, as well as mature plantations embedded within grassland and woodland patches. Dusky-legged Guan tends to avoid extremely dry regions, yet may venture into scrub and agricultural lands, including those used for plantations. It has a noted presence from sea level to high-altitude montane zones, but may be scarce in the densest parts of forests, partly due to a higher presence of mammalian predators and a preference for foraging on the forest floor.
