Description
The chestnut-bellied guan (Penelope ochrogaster) is a species of bird in the family Cracidae. It is found only in Brazil. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forest and subtropical or tropical swampland. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Size
75 cm
Feeding Habits
Chestnut-bellied Guan primarily feeds on flowers, such as Tabebuia and Vismia species, figs from Ficus trees, young liana leaves, and fresh grass, especially important during the dry season. Chestnut-bellied Guan forages both on the ground for invertebrates and in the tree canopy, occasionally associating with other bird species like Ortalis canicollis during feeding.
Habitat
The chestnut-bellied Guan primarily inhabits swampy woods with deciduous trees and savannas within lowland terrains, showing a preference for densely wooded areas rich in woody vines, especially along rivers or swamps. These birds also reside in mixed environments where forest patches intermingle with savanna or grassland regions. They favor regions with semi-deciduous gallery forests that have a moderate undergrowth density and usually stay in areas with abundant leaf-litter on the ground during the dry season. Chestnut-bellied Guan are also found in riparian forests with an open understorey, often including specific tree species such as the Myrciaria sp. and various members of the Fabaceae family.
