Description

The minute hermit (Phaethornis idaliae) is a tiny species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is endemic to humid Atlantic Forest in south-eastern Brazil, ranging from Rio de Janeiro north to south-eastern Bahia. At average of 6.7 centimetres (2.6 in) long and a weight under 3 grams (0.11 oz), this is one of the smallest known birds.

Feeding Habits
Minute Hermit primarily consumes nectar and supplements its diet with small arthropods, notably spiders. It forages along set routes known as trap-lining. Occasionally ingests vegetable matter.
Habitat
The minute Hermit typically inhabits the understorey of primary forests or areas of slight disturbance, including littoral forests and forest edges. It is also found within mature secondary growths, as well as forest islands amidst coastal shrublands. Furthermore, minute Hermits have been observed in mature Eucalyptus plantations that are near primary forests.
