Description
The black-bellied wren (Pheugopedius fasciatoventris) is a species of bird in the family Troglodytidae. It is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and heavily degraded former forest.
Size
15 cm
Feeding Habits
Black-bellied Wren predominantly consumes small arthropods, foraging primarily in dense undergrowth. It exhibits unique searching behaviors, often investigating leaf litter and utilising its adapted bill to extract prey.
Habitat
The black-bellied Wren occupies habitats at the forest edge and within highly degraded areas of forests, such as regenerating pastures and spaces with dense tangle growth. Geographically, their range extends across broader tropical regions where they forage primarily in the canopy and subcanopy, although they also venture into thick undergrowth and even the forest floor. Their typical surroundings include vine tangles and patchy herbaceous regions, and while earlier reports associated the species with streamside vegetation, more recent observations suggest this bird is not necessarily stream-dependent. The presence of artificial edges in their habitat seems preferably utilized over natural streamside environments.
