Feeding Habits
American Flamingo's diet mainly consists of algae, small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. American Flamingo filter-feeds by swinging its head side to side, trapping prey with specialized beak structures. Unique adaptations like serrated bill lamellae and a large tongue enable efficient extraction of food items from the water.
Habitat
American Flamingo commonly inhabit tropical and subtropical regions, thriving in a variety of wetland environments including saline lagoons, salt pans, and estuaries. They favor marine, brackish, and freshwater systems, such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and temporary pools. These birds typically nest and feed at low altitudes, predominantly within coastal areas rich in food sources.
