  This abundant species is a metallic dark green, with a purple back and very long diamond-shaped purple tail. Distinctive white markings on the wings and white chevrons on the tail edges make it easily identifiable, as does its long, thin, curved red bill. Sexes are similar, but immatures have a black bill.

  Green Woodhoopoe consumes a varied diet primarily consisting of arthropods, including moths, beetles, termites, and spiders. Their foraging behavior involves searching tree barks and they display a preference for larvae and pupae. Occasional fruits and seeds supplement their diet. 
    Habitat 
  Green Woodhoopoe thrives across a broad range of habitats, including savannas, open woodlands, palm groves, and riverine forests found in arid thornbush regions. Preferring areas with sizable trees that provide essential cavities for roosting and nesting, green Woodhoopoe is typically found in mixed woodland types and wooded gardens. The species is well-adapted from low altitudes up to elevations exceeding 2000 meters, although it avoids both arid zones and dense forests across its extensive geographical range.
