Description
The grey-hooded sierra finch (Phrygilus gayi) is a species of bird in the family Thraupidae. It is found in Argentina and Chile where its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland and subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland.

In general, these birds are found in South American environments like the Southern Andean Steppe, the Patagonian Steppe, Argentine Monte, the Chilean Matorral, and parts of the Atacama Desert. Unlike related species within the same genus, grey-hooded Sierra Finch displays habitat flexibility, inhabiting more forested regions during nonbreeding seasons, particularly in the Andean foothills, while favoring open landscapes for breeding.
