Description
The common Chiffchaff is a small warbler known for its distinctive "chiff-chaff" call. It can be found in woodlands, gardens, and parks throughout Europe and Asia. It feeds on small insects, spiders and other invertebrates, which it catches by gleaning from leaves and branches. In the breeding season, males will sing to attract females and defend their territories.
Size
10 - 12 cm
Life Expectancy
1-5 years
Feeding Habits
Common Chiffchaff primarily feed on insects, particularly flies from over 50 families, and other invertebrates. They forage actively, hovering and moving through foliage and also consume eggs and larvae of butterflies and moths, especially those of the winter moth.
Habitat
Common Chiffchaff typically breeds in open woodlands with taller trees and ample ground cover suitable for nesting. These birds favor diverse habitats, including lowland deciduous forests, woodland areas with undergrowth, and even human-affected areas such as parks and large gardens. They thrive in the presence of water, selecting damp environments, especially those containing alder and willow trees, and are often found in river valleys. Habitats with at least some taller trees are preferred, although common Chiffchaff can exceptionally inhabit coastal scrubs without tall vegetation. Altitudinally, common Chiffchaff is versatile, breeding up to 2000 meters in mixed forests within mountainous regions. During the non-breeding season, common Chiffchaff occupies various woodlands, from coastal scrub and willow thickets to reedbeds, gardens, and cultivated lands, adapting to a wider range of environments.
