Description
The crimson-winged woodpecker (Picus puniceus) is a species of bird in the woodpecker family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It can grow up to 25 cm long. Its diet is mainly insects and larvae. It is a bright and colourful bird that is hard to misidentify.

Feeding Habits
Crimson-winged Woodpecker primarily consumes ants and termites along with their eggs and grubs. The bird typically forages in pairs within forest canopies on tall trees, gleaning and hammering at bark for food, often joining mixed-species flocks. It favors trees with lichen and moves methodically during feeding.
Habitat
The crimson-winged Woodpecker predominantly resides in evergreen primary and secondary forests, where it prefers areas populated with scattered tall trees. It is also adapted to thriving at the edges of forests, within secondary growth, and in plantation areas. Occasionally, crimson-winged Woodpecker may venture into coastal scrublands and gardens. Their habitat distribution spans across broader geographical regions such as Sumatra, Java, the lowlands of Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, and possibly Borneo.
